Summary
A plaque was unveiled commemorating the official opening of the Ron Penhaligon Clubhouse at the sports ground. The Council has linked Mr Penhaligon's name to the clubhouse in recognition of his contribution to the Shire and Carrara sports complex development. The plaque also records the name of the original owners of the Carrara property, the Cooper family, who held the land from 1865 to 1969. The Coopers are well known in the Nerang area and are recognised by the shire council as having made a contribution to the cultural, sporting and community life of the district. The function was something of a double celebration, Sir Roderick first handed over the keys to the complex to the Albert Shire before Cr Laver performed the official opening. -- Gold Coast Bulletin, 20 September 1984, page 17The clubhouse was proposed after the Jupiters Casino Act was introduced requiring a community benefit commitment. The Jupiters organisation had to contribute $1.2 million to the Albert Shire. Half of the at money has been used in the clubhouse and 500-seat grandstand. The rest will be spent on the grounds before the casino - visible from the complex - opens in October next year.--Gold Coast Bulletin, 20 September 1984, page 17
