"This excellent programme compares how things have changed on Southern Railway from early days until more recently. It offers much rare footage beginning at one of the most important places on the system, the Ashford works, on to the Channel ports, and moving on to the West Country. We also see how the lines of Devon and North Cornwall as well as a trip on the circuitous Southampton-Dorchester line. We visit the famous LNER lines, named after famous race horses, and the GWR lines and feature rarely seen archive footage offering a glimpse into British Railways and Britain's Railways as we recall how things have changed from the 1950s and the glory days of steam to recent times. We continue to the LMS, the largest railway company in the British Isles that served the heartlands of industry of the Midlands, the shipping of the Manchester Ship canal and the River Mersey, the holiday resorts of the North West coast as well as North Wales and Scotland.
