- Summary
-
- "City of Gold Coast is proud of its rich cultural and linguistic diversity. Over 27 per cent of residents were born overseas and 10 per cent of residents speak a language other than English at home. The exhibition, accompanying booklet and 4 short videos explore the beginnings of cultural diversity on the Gold Coast by looking at our first multicultural entrepreneurs. Many of our multicultural settlers moved to the Gold Coast after first arriving and working in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. When they came here they were already skilled and most spoke English well. In the 50s, 60s and 70s the Gold Coast was a series of small towns, with Surfers Paradise as the centre of tourist development. It was growing quickly, and it offered many opportunities for those with entrepreneurial vision."--website
