Summary
August Cragg, U.S. Marshal, had been on his way to Yuma to pick up a prisoner when he stopped in Broken Butte for a nap and a beer after the dusty stagecoach ride. He was hot and tired and needed a rest. But it didn't look that way to the citizens of Broken Butte. The presence of a man with a star on his shirt seemed to make them downright uncomfortable. It was almost as if they had something to hide. August Cragg hadn't intended staying any longer than the next stage out of town, but when some men tried to kill him with a wagon singletree his first night in town, he began to get curious. Whatever the good people of Broken Butte, Arizona Territory, had on their consciences, it must have been nasty, and the marshal decided that the time had come to find out about it
