Summary
"Ali Cherri (b. 1976) is a Beirut-born artist whose work with drawing, film, installation and sculpture investigates artefacts and the natural world, and their place within national or civic museums. Interested in the aesthetics, practices and politics associated with historical institutions, Cherri was chosen as the 2021 National Gallery Artist in Residence and invited to respond to its collection and that of the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry. This book documents the development of that residency; tracing Cherri's research into paintings that have been vandalised in the National Gallery as he raises questions surrounding history and its construction, the role of cultural institutions and the physical and conceptual tools necessary to their work. Newly commissioned texts by Priyesh Mistry and Rose Lejeune, as well as a conversation between Martin Roberts and the artist provide original insight into Cherri's practice." -- back cover
