Summary
Thaddeus McCallum had attained the rank of sergeant major in the U.S. Army. Upon his retirement, he joined the Pinkerton Detective Agency, and after a decade of distinguished service, made enough money to purchase a ranch in New Mexico. Fortunately for Thad, he met Pedro Peralta, a Mexican-American who had had years of experience breeding, breaking, and selling horses. The two formed a partnership and succeeded in building up a notable business. When McCallum receives an urgent letter from Albert Shaw, a former comrade in arms who saved his life during the Spanish- American War, he can't refuse to help. Shaw's wife is deathly ill and he hasn't been able to contact their son Jeff. He wants McCallum to go to Columbus, New Mexico, where Jeff had gone to learn photography from his uncle, and give him the message to come home. Despite his age and the aches and pains that go with it, McCallum prepares to leave and Peralta, who ordinarily would be left behind to manage the ranch, insists on accompanying McCallum on this journey. When they arrive in Columbus, New Mexico, they learn that Pancho Villa and his army of revolutionaries have recently attacked the community to obtain guns, horses and other supplies and have taken Jeff with all the photographic equipment back to Mexico with them. Thad and Pedro cross the RoÌ Bravo in pursuit, not sure how they will find Pancho Villa's army and rescue Jeff
