A young Welshman, Thomas Watkins, is employed as Lawrence's manservant. -- A Pair of Exiles : The affair between James, who is in mounting debt and in trouble with his regiment, and Sarah, the housemaid turned actress, comes to a head when she discovers she is pregnant, and Sir Geoffrey Dillon is brought in to sort out the problem. -- Married Love : Elizabeth and Lawrence's marriage continues to deteriorate with Lawrence refusing to consummate it, and Lawrence confides in his publisher, Sir Edwin Partridge, who agrees to satisfy Elizabeth's needs. -- Whom God Hath Joined : It's Christmas 1908, and while Elizabeth is at Eaton Place with her parents, Lawrence is at his aunt's. While Hudson tries to impress his brother, Arthur Bellamy does his best to discover what Hudson's 'secret' is
