"This is an honest and personal account of the ways in which Indigenity, academics and Australian society intersect. The book emerged from sustained research that the author undertook in Western Sydney, talking to Aboriginal people around Mount Druitt. She illustrates the deep struggles within the Indigenous world about why and how being a blackfella matters, about the past living in the present, about materiality and symbols and whether subaltern lives can be celebrated. Transcripts of autobiographical recordings illustrate elements of the fall-out from what we have come to know as 'Aboriginal history'.
