Summary
This miniseries tells the epic history of oil ... how it has dominated global politics, shaken the world economy, and transformed our century. "Our plan" deals with the rise of John D. Rockefeller and Ida Tarbell's exposé of him. Looks at Rockefeller's controversial legacy as well as how Tarbell served as a role model for the modern investigative journalist. "Empires of oil" deals with the merger of Shell Oil and Royal Dutch to challenge Rockefeller's Standard Oil. Talks of the discovery of oil in the Mideast as well as Russia and how oil helped the Allies win World War I. "The black giant" deals with the Roaring Twenties and the increased need for oil especially with the advent of more cars. Profiles Calouste Gulbenkian who staked his claim on the oil rights for Iraq. "War and oil" talks about the role oil played in World War II including how it affected strategy as well as what the lack of oil did to slow war efforts and eventually lead to the failure of Japan. "Crude diplomacy" deals with the increasing importance of oil after World War II and the shift in oil production from the United States to the MIddle East. "Power to the producers" talks of the cheap oil and the new automobile culture for Americans eventually leading to a power shift from the American oil companies to the oil producing countries. "The tinderbox" deals with the two decades between 1971 and 1991 when power shifted and nations and companies jockeyed for position during the rise of OPEC. Follows the events in the Middle East from the British withdrawal from the Persian Gulf up to the burning oil wells in Kuwait during the first Gulf War. "The new order of oil" discusses the beginning of a new era for oil after the first Gulf War as environmental issues are raised.
