Summary
This series recreates three high profile and controversial court cases which raised major issues of national identity at a time when Australia was evolving into a more autonomous federated nation in the late 19th century. The Mount Rennie Outrage: 1886 trial of 11 Sydney 'larrikins' charged with gang rape. Eureka 13: 1855 trial of 13 'diggers' detained after the Eureka uprising. Massacre at Myall Creek: The trial in 1838 of 7 European settlers involved in the killing of 30 Aborigines. Drawing extensively on actual court transcripts and journalism from the time, each episode recreates not only the trial itself but also the highly charged public and political debate surrounding it.
