Summary
In Chicago, V.I. Warshawski is asked to find a man who's been missing for four decades, but her search turns lethal. Skeletons from the city's racially charged history rise up to force her back: a nun who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. dies without revealing crucial evidence; on the city's South Side, people spit when she shows up. And whilst the elderly sisters who hired her are not completely forthcoming, V.I. finds that her family are also keeping secrets. Then her cousin arrives in Chicago to work on a political campaign and disappears mysteriously. Fearing that her father had been a bent cop, and with deception and corruption every step, V.I. is determined to take the investigation all the way to its frightening end
