Summary
The Southport Hotel was located near the present day Gold Coast BridgeSouthport Hotel CabaretThe Southport Hotel was one of the oldest and most fashionable hotels in Southport. It was opened in 1878 by Richard Gardiner and was a popular meeting place for workers from the nearby sawmill or passing horsemen. To get to the hotel meant wading through a boggy and almost impassable swamp. Gardiner built a corduroy road of ti-tree saplings over the worst parts. This eventually became part of Queen Street. Theodore Lenneberg was also a licensee of the hotel. The hotel was eventually demolished to make way for the Sundale Shopping Centre.
