Summary
Simón Bolívar was a key liberator of Latin America. Born in Venezuela in 1783 he joined the army and led the fight for independence from Spain in Colombia and Venezuela. Venezuela was declared independent in 1810, a historic moment that still lives on today in the memories of the Venezuelan people and in the Bolivarian Republic of Hugo Chavez. However, although Chavez frequently refers to the ideas and achievements of Bolívar in his speeches the two men are very different; Bolívar was a true liberal, Chavez is not, so is Chavez's use of Bolívar's image legitimate?
