Summary
Reduced by one-third with extensive re-shooting after rejection by a preview audience this is a fascinating if incomplete work. A triangle involves three characters dominated by memories: a painter, his passionate wife who has blinded him in a fight and a shell-shocked naval officer. The settings of the isolated cliff house and wreck-strewn beach suggest a spiritual dead-end providing darkly elemental overtones to the emotional battle. Renoir's sense of fine nuance and a certain warmth in the relationships fills out the bleakness of the film noir mould
