Summary
Duronimus Karlof is a rising star at Harvad. He holds a prestigious professorship, his students idolize him, and he is widely considered one of the most inspiring scientific minds of his generation. The death of a colleague, however, forces him to reconsider his life's purpose. In a moment of existential crisis, he begins to question the constraints imposed on our freedoms by the laws of nature. Believing that ther is no greater scientific challenge facing humankind, he sets out to assemble a critical mass of experts to build a machine that breaks all known laws. What ensues is bigger than the Manhatten Project, the Space Race and the Human Genome Project combined. A parody of scientific endeavour, Critical mass finds the ridiculous in almost every aspect of contemporary intellectual life - and highlights the challenge of thinking independently when caught up in an accelerating universe of absurdity
