Summary
Bill Laver, a member of a pioneering family, served on the Albert Shire Council for 26 years, 12 of them as chairman. He was first elected to council in 1965 and retired from council in 1970 but rejoined again in 1973 and was immediately elected deputy chairman, a position he held until 1982 when he became chairman. He steered the district through a dramatic period of growth during the 1970s and 1980s. Mr Laver's grandfather was a councillor on the former Nerang Shire Council. He was the shire's last chairman with the office undergoing a name change to Mayor at the local government elections in March 1994. -- information source Gold Coast City Council Local Studies Library Newspaper Clippings - Laver, William (Bill), Cr
