Summary

East Yorkshire, 1941. Fran Bewholme arrives home heartbroken after her sweetheart has turned his attention to another. Rather than finding comfort for her distress, she is seduced by her brother-in-law and manipulated into keeping the act a secret. Months later it can remain hidden no longer, and Fran finds herself pregnant and alone, shunned by her family. When she gives birth to twins, her mother heartlessly wrenches the babies from her, and Fran is overcome with despair.
