Summary
Long before actress Emma Watson became the face of the United Nations' HeForShe global movement, giving an impassioned speech that generated more than 1.2 billion conversations on social media and earning her a spot on the TIME 100 list, Elizabeth Nyamayaro was behind the scenes, crafting the fine print of the movement - HeForShe was her brainchild - which would revolutionise the global fight for gender equality. Elizabeth, a Senior Advisor at the United Nations on gender equality and the Global Head of HeForShe, spent her childhood in an African village in Zimbabwe that was ravaged by both famine and HIV/AIDS. At the age of eight, Elizabeth was rescued from starvation by a woman in a blue uniform. When Elizabeth asked the woman why she was helping her, the woman responded, As Africans, we must lift each other up. From that day on, Elizabeth - not knowing at the time who the woman was or where she worked - vowed to become just like her. Against all odds, nearly two decades later, she herself donned a blue uniform, as a member of the United Nations. Living proof of the power of sheer will and determination, for over twenty years Elizabeth has worked at the forefront of global development, improving the lives of underserved populations, holding leadership roles at the World Bank, World Health Organization, UNAIDS, Merck, and UN Women. But she wouldn't have done any of these things had she not been instilled with the incredibly valuable and powerful African ideologies taught to her by her grandmother, her aunt, the girl in the blue uniform, and other strong men and women in her formative years. In I AM A GIRL FROM AFRICA, Elizabeth recounts her incredible personal journey and uses her own story as a vehicle to illustrate these important philosophies (such as Ubuntu- I am, because we are ), which she applies to her everyday life, to her field work with the United Nations, to her movement for global gender equality. This is a philosophy she believes we can all use to change our world for the better-to lift each other up
