Summary
John Grey, a middle-aged man, leaves an established career and moves with his wife to a farm high in the hills of Aberdeenshire, where a herd of suckler cows is to be their sole source of future income. His friends think he needs his head examined, but John is a Yorkshireman, stubborn as they come, and he is a quick learner. He and his wife Charlotte face many challenges, including extremes of weather, the isolated situation of the farm, the cussedness of animals and of people, and the strangeness and charm of the Doric tongue
