Summary
The Rough Trade story began in 1977 when Geoff Travis opened a record shop offering an alternative to the middle-of-the-road rock music that dominated the music business. Rough Trade became more than a shop when it put out a single without the support of an established record company, but distribution still had to be handed over to the likes of EMI or CBS. In 1977 Richard Scott challenged this, and became the architect of a grand scheme: independent nationwide distribution
