As a youth, Andrew chose to rescue his mother from a yachting accident rather than rescue the woman whom Andrew thought was carrying his child (his brother's fiancee, no less), he regards himself as a man without honor. His penance is to live with his guilt and nightmares. Astrid has loved Andrew since the day she met him, but when he decided to travel abroad rather than build on their budding attraction, she resigned herself to a practical union with Herbert, Viscount Amery. Herbert, a bluff, jovial, hounds and horses man, is killed in a hunting accident, while Astrid is left carrying his posthumous child. Andrew returns from his travels thinking Astrid is safely married, only to find that she's grieving, angry at her late husband's treatment of her, and in need of consolation. She turns to Andrew, who cannot refuse her his intimate attentions, but tells Astrid a dalliance is all he can offer. When accidents begin to befall Astrid, Andrew marries her to keep her safe from Herbert's villainous younger brother, Douglas. Andrew realizes that if Astrid will have him - and she will - then his wandering and self-reproach have come to an end, and his happily ever after has begun
