Summary
Crucible: The Australian in Action in Vietnam is a collection of events taken from the Narratives, Unit Histories, newspaper reports, and other historical resources involving the Australian Force in Vietnam, 1964-1972... of great individual and unit heroism, of large battles - including the first massed tank attack since World War 2 - of ambushes, and bunker assaults, of the last ever bayonet charges by Australian infantrymen in war, and of those many fleeting contact and firefights - all in the most hostile of environments against a courageous and determined enemy. But there are also incidents of controversy - of unspeakable tragedy, of gross incompetence and negligence at all levels, of men maimed by booby traps and mines, of atrocities, murder, and 'friendly fire' incidents, of 'fragging', and even of cowardice under fire...truly, a crucible in which the character of men at war was fully tested
