The bridge was officially opened by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Alan MansfieldDue to its proximity to the Sundale Shopping Centre, the bridge became colloquially known as the 'Sundale Bridge'. At the time it was the first major road bridge to cross the Nerang River and connect the northern and southern parts of the Gold Coast either side of the Nerang River and so was named 'The Gold Coast Bridge'
