Summary
The 1931 floods occurred in the first week of February. Southport escaped with minimal damage from the soaking rain and tempestuous winds, thought to be from the modern bituminised roads and the concrete water channelling. Many other suburbs, mainly Nerang, Coomera, Coolangatta and Tallebudgera suffered most of the damage, and loss to many residents was considerable. Several dairy herds were depleted as the result of drowning, fences and crops were swept away, bridges were washed out and many residents were rendered temporarily homeless as a result of their homes being partially submerged. No loss of human life was recorded as a result of the 1931 floods. (Information taken from: South Coast Bulletin, 13 February 1931, p.7)
