Summary
Lorenz Herman Thams was 13 and Charles August Thams 4 when they arrived in Brisbane from Denmark on the sailing ship Windsor Castle, settling at Rosewood but moving to Southport in 1887 where their father Johann August Thams became a builder, both Herman and Charles were involved in the family business. Johann August Thams died in 1898 and L. Herman led the way with some of Southport's outstanding building projects of the era, including the sea wall from Nind to Queens Street in 1901-02 when the Southport Bar was opposite the Pacific Hotel and sometimes waves threatened the coastal road along the Esplanade. L. Herman also built one of the first guesthouses in Southport, the Chelmsford, which was popular with Brisbane visitors for many years until destroyed by fire, and the magnificent colonial mansion Seabank, which stood on the site of the present Seabank building in Marine Parade. The Thams also built parts of the Cable Station, the first Star of the Sea Convent and a classroom at The Southport School (which remains in place today within TSS grounds). Charles August Thams joined his brother in the family business in 1911 and went on to build many town projects and houses. The brothers and their families also became involved in just about every aspect of Southport community life. They helped establish the Southport Show at Owen Park and the Southport RSL sub-branch and memorial club. Charles Thams was a founding member of the Chamber of Commerce and an original member of Southport Agricultural and Horticultural Society. The Thams Brothers also pioneered movies on the Gold Coast, they built their first cinema at Southport, the Regnant at Nerang Street, opposite today's Court House Hotel. In 1938 the Regnant was renamed the Regent and by 1940 the Thams had abandoned all building programs to concentrate on the movie business.
