Summary
Scotland, 1766. Angus McTern takes his duties as laird very seriously. So when the legal heiress to his castle - the beautiful Edilean Talbot - arrives, Angus's peaceful existence is shaken up forever . . . At first, Angus acts coolly towards Edilean. He resents her privileged upbringing, and is angered by the way his whole clan seems to worship her. But when her entire inheritance is stolen and she desperately needs his help, Angus puts aside his pride. However, all is not as it seems, and in a terrible mix-up Angus finds himself accused of snatching the inheritance. The only way he can escape prosecution is to board a ship to America with Edilean and during the crossing a love begins to grow between them. But their happiness is short-lived because it is not freedom that awaits them in America but Edilean's money-hungry fiance, who forces Edilean to return to Scotland with him. That is, until fate draws Angus and Edilean together once more . .

Review
  • Edilean Talbot had a plan, and that plan had nothing to do with Angus McTern. In order to avoid being married off to one of her uncle Neville Lawler’s odious friends (and having her dowry stolen from her by the very same greedy Neville), Edilean planned on taking her dowry; meeting her fiancé, James Harcourt, in Glasgow; and then running off to America, where they would live happily ever after. The only problem with Edilean’s plan is that Angus, the annoying leader of the clan McTern, turns out to be the one driving Edilean and her money to Glasgow. With the second installment in her Edilean saga, Deveraux returns to her historical-romance roots with another tale of a beautiful, strong-willed woman matching wits with a tall, dark, and equally stubborn man. While the plot occasionally pushes the reader’s willing sense of disbelief to the brink and back, the novel’s colorful characters and lively writing ensure that Days of Gold is classic Deveraux. -- Charles, John (Reviewed 12-01-2009) (Booklist, vol 106, number 7, p31)
  • The inevitable prequel to Lavender Morning places Deveraux on familiar historical romance ground as she traces the journey to America of the namesake of the fictional town of Edilean, Va. English-born Edilean Talbot is very out of place when she arrives in 1766 Scotland to live with her uncle. A pressing problem presents itself when her uncle plans to marry off the rich, beautiful and well-educated Edilean to one of his unsavory friends the moment she turns 18. Reluctantly, Angus McTern, the highland hunk who laughs at Edilean even as he falls for her, helps her escape and accompanies her on a transatlantic voyage acting the role of husband. Once in Boston, they go their separate ways, later reuniting when old friends help Edilean dispense with an enemy. After dozens of novels, Deveraux has a sure hand evoking plucky heroines, dastardly villains and irresistible heroes, as well as a well-rounded supporting cast. If the plot seems familiar and occasionally contrived (how convenient laudanum is available when someone needs to be knocked out), the pace moves quickly and the romance sparks with enough voltage to keep readers turning pages.
