  • Welsh PI Robin Llywelyn awakens from a weeklong, morphine-induced stupor. He can’t remember his name, where he is, or anything else. All that’s certain is that he’s handcuffed to a hospital bed. That changes a bit when a copper arrives and tells him his name—and that, since he’s dying of lung cancer, the Crown has decided not to prosecute. A look out the window tells him he’s in Wales, but he’s completely blank about who he really is and what kind of trouble he’s in. In time, he divines he’s hiding out from a mix of criminals and bent cops but still doesn’t know why. But Llywelyn is nothing if not resilient, and he manages to find new troubles with the same bent cops and bad guys, as well as with a mountain of bogus currency and a bit of his own history. Relentlessly bleak, mordantly funny, and occasionally noirish, Lewis writes brilliantly, particularly about Llywelyn’s ruminations on his looming death and life in somnolent Welsh villages and small cities knackered by economic collapse. A worthy follow-up to The Last Llanelli Train (2009). -- Gaughan, Thomas (Reviewed 02-15-2011) (Booklist, vol 107, number 12, p53)
  • /* Starred Review */ From the mesmerizing opening, in which Lewis adopts a second-person voice to facilitate the reader's identification with his protagonist's plight, until the satisfying conclusion, the author's third noir featuring Welsh PI Robin Llywelyn (after Swansea Terminal) fires on all cylinders. Llywelyn wakes up without knowing where he is, or who he is, only to learn that he has terminal cancer. While his condition does result in the dismissal of fraud charges against him, Llywelyn still faces the prospect of spending his remaining months in a depressing hospice. The investigator manages to sneak away to a local bar, where he receives a mysterious offer of work. That in turn leads to an opportunity on the wrong side of the law, which proves impossible for the dying man to resist. Gallows humor affords some slight leavening of the book's bleak, despairing worldview, one that James Ellroy fans will find familiar.
